SAP SE has announced new partnerships with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its “digital sovereignty” offerings for European governments. This initiative reflects a broader trend among European nations to develop sovereign AI services to maintain control over this critical technology.
As Europe’s largest software company, SAP has committed approximately $23.5 billion (around 20 billion euros) toward building these sovereign services. The project, named “OpenAI for Germany,” will be delivered through SAP’s Delos Cloud. This cloud solution ensures that data is stored locally and complies fully with European data protection regulations.
**Business Adaptation to Generative AI**
SAP has spent years adapting its software business to meet the growing demands of cloud computing. Now, the company is positioning itself for the era of generative AI. SAP’s cloud sales are projected to reach nearly $22 billion, almost triple the amount reported in 2019.
Although SAP has not disclosed specific sales figures for Delos Cloud, it is known that this service runs on Microsoft Azure infrastructure, further highlighting SAP’s commitment to delivering secure, sovereign cloud solutions to its government customers.
This strategic move is expected to strengthen SAP’s role in Europe’s digital ecosystem by providing government institutions with AI tools that prioritize data sovereignty and compliance.
