Vodafone Idea’s shares have seen a significant surge this month, rising as much as 7% in today’s trading session. This marks the third gain for the stock in four sessions, resulting in an impressive increase of over 33% since September 4, when the shares were trading around ₹6.60. At the time of writing, Vodafone Idea’s stock was up 4%, priced at ₹8.73 per share.

#### Legal Developments: Government Supports Vodafone’s AGR Relief Plea
The recent surge follows the Supreme Court’s agreement to hear Vodafone Idea’s plea related to its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. In a hearing last Friday, the government expressed that it does not oppose Vodafone Idea’s AGR plea and is committed to finding a viable solution, especially as an equity stakeholder in the company. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for Friday, September 26.
#### Stake Details: Government Converts Dues into Equity
To manage Vodafone Idea’s debt, the government converted some of the company’s dues into equity, increasing its stake to 49%. This move makes the government the largest shareholder in Vodafone Idea. Several officials from the telecom ministry, including Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, have clarified that there are no current plans to increase the stake beyond 49%.
#### Broker Analysis: Citi Calls Vodafone Idea a “High-Risk” Buy
Following the Supreme Court’s admission of Vodafone Idea’s AGR plea and the government’s supportive stance, Citi brokerage described Vodafone Idea’s shares as a “high-risk” buy, assigning a price target of ₹10. According to Citi, the potential for relief has improved, but significant risks remain.
With total AGR liabilities approaching ₹2 trillion, Vodafone Idea has cautioned that the additional claims pose a serious threat to its survival, impacting its 198 million subscribers and more than 18,000 employees.
