NFL coach left bloodied after being crushed by his own quarterback in sickening collision

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn was left bloodied after a shocking sideline collision with his own quarterback, Marcus Mariota, during the second quarter of the Commanders’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The incident occurred as Mariota rushed toward the sideline and was pushed out of bounds by Raiders star Tristin McCollum. In the chaos, Mariota collided with Quinn, causing the head coach to fall harshly to the ground with the back of his head hitting the turf. The impact left Quinn bloodied, drawing immediate attention from everyone on the sideline.

Every Washington player and staff member nearby quickly rushed over to assist Quinn. Fortunately, he was able to get back to his feet on his own. A team official later handed him a towel to wipe off his bloody nose. Despite the scary moment, Quinn continued coaching throughout the rest of the first half.

Interestingly, no penalty was called on McCollum for the play, even though Mariota was nearly out of bounds at the time of the collision. After halftime, Quinn jogged back onto the field to a roaring applause from Commanders fans, waving gratefully at those who cheered for him.

It’s worth noting that the NFL currently does not have a concussion protocol for head coaches. The type of hit Quinn took—his head recoiling off the ground—would typically warrant a medical evaluation by the team doctor.

For some context, Quinn stands 6-foot-2 and weighed 205 pounds during his playing days at Salisbury University. Mariota is slightly taller and heavier at 6-foot-4, 222 pounds, and delivered the collision while running at full speed with protective pads on.

Mariota is currently the Commanders’ starting quarterback on Sunday due to a knee injury suffered by Jayden Daniels in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers. While Daniels is not expected to be sidelined long-term, Mariota has impressed in his temporary starting role, rushing for a touchdown on the opening drive of this game.
