It’s time for the Titans to move on from Brian Callahan

Earlier this week, I wrote a post kind of defending Brian Callahan. I still stand by the statement that many of the issues the Tennessee Titans have faced are out of his control. However, this year, he has been making some terrible in-game decisions.

Take, for instance, today’s game. By his own admission, Callahan couldn’t make a clear decision on whether to go for a 4th and 1, even after the Indianapolis Colts took a timeout and he responded with one of his own. The Titans then received a delay of game penalty because the field goal unit was late getting on the field. This kind of mismanagement is simply unacceptable.

Another questionable call was the challenge he made in the fourth quarter when the Colts were awarded a first down on a short pass. Although Callahan ultimately won the challenge, the risk far outweighed the reward. The Titans were trailing 41–20 with about 8:30 left in the game. The timeout he used in challenging that call was far more valuable than the half-yard gained by winning the challenge—especially considering Jonathan Taylor then gained five yards on the very next play.

It’s worth noting that the hiring process for Callahan wasn’t flawed. He was a hot candidate at the time, interviewing for multiple roles and making the short list for at least one other team. The problem is that the actual head coaching job has proven to be too much for him to handle.

He probably won’t get fired this week, but we have now reached a point where Chad Brinker and Mike Borgonzi should be making plans for who they will hire before the 2026 season arrives.
