Seven dead in separate home invasion attacks

EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – Police are investigating two home invasion shootings in Juarez, Mexico, that have claimed the lives of six men and one woman.

The first attack occurred Thursday night in the Patria neighborhood near Juarez’s lower valley. A vehicle crashed into the fence of a house near the corner of Robinson and San Lorenzito streets. Following the crash, an unknown number of assailants entered the home and opened fire on four people, including a pregnant woman, according to police reports. Three males died at the scene, while the woman survived and was transported to a hospital by ambulance.

Video footage from the scene shows police and firefighters examining the wrecked vehicle near the residence. Authorities told Border Report’s news partner ProVideo that the residents maintained an “altar” to Santa Muerte, or Holy Death, inside the home. U.S. officials note that members of Mexican drug cartels have been known to seek favor from this unique spiritual icon.

Early Friday morning, a second mass shooting took place in Anapra, a northwest Juarez neighborhood located across the border from Sunland Park, New Mexico. Police responded to reports from neighbors who heard multiple gunshots near the corner of Camaron and Quimera streets. Upon arrival, officers found three men and one woman dead inside a residence. Several 9mm and .223-caliber bullet casings were recovered at the scene. A second woman survived the attack.

Juarez has recorded 60 homicides during the first 19 days of September, highlighting a surge in violence.

In a brief news conference on Friday, Juarez Municipal Public Safety Director Cesar Omar Muñoz announced that additional police officers have been assigned to the two affected neighborhoods. He stated that Chihuahua state authorities are investigating the shootings but did not dismiss the possibility of a drug-related motive.

Juarez officials previously reported several home invasion killings in July, linking them to drug gang activity following the transfer of 120 gang members from Juarez jails to prisons elsewhere in the state of Chihuahua.
