Karnataka’s Devdutt Padikkal made a stunning return to the India A circuit with an impressive century against Australia A in Lucknow. The left-handed batsman resumed his innings at an overnight score of 86 and reached his hundred quickly on the fourth morning. This was Padikkal’s seventh First-Class (FC) ton, taking him past the 3,000-run mark in FC cricket.

Team Effort and Partnership with Dhruv Jurel

Batting at number four, Padikkal shared a solid partnership with India A wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel. India A were 222/4 when Jurel joined Padikkal in the middle. The duo added 228 runs for the fifth wicket as India A responded strongly to Australia A’s first innings total of 532/6 declared.

Despite the pressure, Jurel counter-attacked brilliantly, reaching his century off just 114 balls. He ended his innings with a superb 140 runs from 197 balls.

Padikkal’s 150-Run Knock

Padikkal made his innings count with a commanding 150 from 281 balls, including 14 fours and a six. After Jurel’s departure, he added 41 runs with Tanush Kotian and 29 more alongside Harsh Dubey before being dismissed by Corey Rocchiccioli. India A were 520/7 at the time, and play was eventually stopped due to rain with the score at 532/7.

Milestone: 3,000 First-Class Runs

Playing his 45th FC match, Padikkal has now surpassed 3,000 runs in first-class cricket. He currently owns 3,038 runs at an average of over 42, with 7 centuries and 18 fifties to his name. Out of these, 90 runs have come in two Test matches representing Team India.

Career Highlights and Recent Form

At just 25 years old, Padikkal has already established himself as a promising talent in Indian cricket. This match marks only his second competitive outing after the Indian Premier League 2025 season, where he played for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Earlier this month, Padikkal made a comeback to first-class cricket with a half-century and an unbeaten 16 runs in the Duleep Trophy semi-final held in Bengaluru.

International Stint: Test Debut and Challenges

Padikkal made his Test debut against England in Dharamsala last year, notching a half-century. However, he only played one more Test match during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 opener against Australia in Perth. After scoring a duck in the first innings and 25 runs in the second, he was dropped from the playing XI for the remainder of the tour and missed India’s England tour in June.

Despite these setbacks, Padikkal’s recent performances indicate a promising return to form as he continues to build his cricketing career.
